The World Health Organization (WHO) will discuss the possible dangers of the new corona variant B.1.1.529 on Friday afternoon. Experts are meeting in Geneva to see if it should be classified as a worrisome variant.
According to reports from researchers who have already examined samples of the variant, it contains many mutations compared to the known variants.
It could be even more contagious than the Delta variant due to a change, scientists say. The WHO says that more research needs to be done in any case to gain clarity about the virus.
The WHO declined to comment on the announced travel restrictions or whether they are of any benefit. The Dutch virologist Marion Koopmans already questioned the effect of those travel bans because it is not known where and when the variant originated and therefore not where it is already.
