The Ukrainian army says it has repulsed attacks by the Russians west of the city of Lisichiansk. It thus managed to prevent the strategically important city from being surrounded, according to the general staff.
Lisichiansk itself was again the target of heavy air and artillery attacks. Russian troops would already be on the outskirts of the city in the south.
Several thousand Ukrainian troops are reportedly stationed in the city to stop the Russians.
Lischansk is located in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk near Severodonetsk, on the other side of the river. Severodonetsk has recently been conquered by the Russians.
This makes Lisitchansk one of the last places in Luhansk still in the hands of Ukraine.
