The United Kingdom recalls some embassy staff and their relatives from Ukraine. That decision was taken because of rising tensions in the region, where Russia fears an invasion.
The British embassy reports that the embassy in Kyiv will remain open and essential work will continue. The British broadcaster BBC reported Monday morning that about half of the employees will remain and that the withdrawal has already started.
The partial departure follows the United States’ broadcasting to relatives of US embassy personnel to leave Ukraine. That group will be evacuated from Monday, also due to concerns about a raid. Ukraine has described the US broadcaster as “premature”.
The European Union does not yet plan to bring back the families of EU diplomats from Ukraine, foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said earlier Monday.
