Truck Accident in Mexico: 53 Migrants Killed, Dozens Injured

On Thursday, at least 53 migrants were killed in a truck accident in southeastern Mexico in the state of Chiapas. This is reported by the federal prosecutor’s office of Mexico.

The truck was packed with migrants. According to the emergency services, dozens of people have been injured, three of whom are in serious condition. The accident took place in Chiapa de Corzo, near the regional capital Tuxtla Gutierrez.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tweeted that the victims were migrants from Central America. He expressed his condolences.

The driver had lost control of the steering wheel, after which the truck overturned, the Chiapas emergency services on site explained to the press. According to eyewitnesses, the truck drove too fast through a bend. The victims are from Guatemala, according to the emergency services.

Chiapas borders neighbouring Guatemala. The state acts as a gateway for migrants from Central America. This mainly concerns people from Honduras and El Salvador. People smugglers often use trucks to transport undocumented migrants to the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people try to reach the US via Mexico every year.
