The United States has confirmed that it will buy and donate 500 million corona vaccines to less wealthy countries.
According to the White House, this is a “historic” decision that should significantly boost the “global fight against the coronavirus”.
These are vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech that are produced in the US. The companies have confirmed that they are participating in the Joe Biden administration’s initiative and say they will not make a profit from it. 200 million doses are to be delivered in 2021 and another 300 million in the first half of 2022.
“It is the largest single country purchase and donation of vaccines,” the White House said in a statement. The funds will go to 92 countries and the African Union. “Further steps” are to be announced in the coming days, the Biden administration said.
The US has already vaccinated a large part of the population. More than 60 percent of adult Americans have had at least one dose of a corona vaccine in more than four months.
Washington now says it wants to help the rest of the world “beat” the pandemic and previously announced it would donate 80 million vaccines by the end of June.
