Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has closed three opposition news sites by decree.
He justifies the censorship by pointing out that these media were a threat to national security and spread Russian propaganda.
The sites ZIK, NewsOne and 112 were immediately taken down or blocked. They were often the mouthpieces of the country’s second party, the Opposition Platform for Life.
The platform’s largest constituency lives in the east or south of the country. There, many people speak Russian as their first language and are culturally or economically oriented towards Russia.
Their position has weakened since an elected pro-Russian president was ousted and ousted with Western help in 2014.
