Merkel Presents Law to Pass Federal States When Imposing Lockdown

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her cabinet drafted a bill on Tuesday that would allow them to impose lockdowns themselves outside the federal states.

Merkel believes federal intervention in the fight against the coronavirus is necessary because the federal states always want to be less strict than they themselves consider required.

Moreover, the measures that were decided in joint consultation are often carried out half-heartedly or not regionally.

If the Bundestag agrees as expected, the federal government can intervene anywhere as it sees fit.
