Two people who travelled to Valencia from Spain from the United States tested positive for the coronavirus.
It may be the first time since travel restrictions were introduced in March that infected people have come to Spain from abroad.
Authorities in the tourist region say the infected duo, after arriving in Spain, presumably failed to quarantine for two weeks, as required. Nothing has yet been announced about their nationality.
The two would not have flown directly to Valencia from the US.
“We don’t know exactly which route they took. And whether they eventually went to Valencia by car or plane,” said regional health chief Ana Barceló.
In Valencia, there are tourist resorts such as Benidorm and Alicante.
The measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus will be further relaxed in the region on Monday. Then people are allowed to meet in larger groups.
