The number of deaths from the coronavirus in India has increased in the past 24 hours by a record number of 3,780, health authorities report Wednesday.
In addition, 382,315 new infections were found in the country.
The total number of confirmed corona infections in India passed 20 million on Tuesday. More than 200,000 residents of the country have died since the start of the pandemic.
Medical experts suspect that the death toll and number of infections is actually five to ten times greater than what has been officially recorded. This is because not everyone is tested for symptoms of the disease. Suspected corona deaths are not included in the figures by the authorities.
Since the beginning of April, the number of positive tests has risen sharply, sending India into a major health crisis. The care cannot cope with a large number of corona patients. For example, there is a shortage of beds and medicines. Many people die in ambulances waiting for a bed or oxygen. Mortuaries and crematoriums cannot cope with a large number of deaths.
In addition, there are problems with the supply and delivery of corona vaccines, which are reducing the number of vaccinations in the country. About 1.5 million people are now vaccinated every day. During the peak in the number of daily vaccinations a month ago, this was much higher.
