The German armed forces have deployed hundreds of troops to support the emergency services after the severe storm in western Germany.
Helicopters and Fuchs-type armoured transport vehicles are also being deployed, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense in Berlin.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, which borders on the Netherlands, about 200 soldiers took action on Thursday morning. In the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, 70 men were involved.
They have large vehicles with which they can reach municipalities that are cut off from the outside world by high water.
