Germany Wants to Lift Strictest Corona Restrictions in March

Germany wants to end the strictest corona measures before March 20. German media report that Chancellor Olaf Scholz will talk to state leaders on Wednesday about the far-reaching relaxation of the current restrictions.

The media hold a draft for the deliberations, the basis for the discussions. The step-by-step plan included therein states that the restrictions will be gradually relaxed so that no more far-reaching measures will apply from March 20. What that exactly means is not entirely clear. Low-threshold measures, in any case, include the obligation to wear a face mask in public transport.

Before that, the 2G policy in non-essential stores will expire, and unvaccinated people with negative test evidence will be allowed to go back to restaurants. The so-called 2G-plus policy now applies in eateries, which means that guests must be vaccinated or cured and have a negative test certificate.

The number of infections in Germany has reached record levels in recent weeks due to the omikron variant of the coronavirus. According to German experts, the current wave could level off in the coming weeks, but they have also warned against easing restrictions too quickly. Almost 75 percent of the German population is fully vaccinated. In addition, many vaccinated people have already received a booster shot.
