The US federal police department FBI is investigating whether foreign intelligence services are involved in the emails on which the right-wing tabloid.
It is about The New York Post based a controversial article about Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, news channel NBC reports based on two insider sources.
The emails were found on a laptop in a repair shop in Biden’s home state of Delaware. The FBI has confiscated the laptop for investigation.
The New York Post has said it received the emails from Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani.
In the first story about the emails, the tabloid suggests that a meeting took place between then-Vice President Biden and a representative of the Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma, where Biden’s son Hunter then worked. Both Joe Bidens campaign team and Hunter Biden’s attorney deny that the meeting ever took place.
The New York Post story was met with much scepticism. Twitter and Facebook decided, to the ire of President Trump and the Republicans, to restrict the circulation of the story.
The Washington Post also reports that US intelligence agencies warned the White House last year that Russian intelligence agencies are trying to use Giuliani to spread misinformation.
The warning was based on sources, including intercepted communications, which revealed that during a trip to Ukraine in December 2019, Giuliani had contact with persons affiliated with Russian intelligence services.
