Facebook continues to ban the Taliban from its platforms. Nor will the blockade be lifted just like that.
Not even if the United States decides to lift sanctions against the group. That’s what the social media company’s chief said. According to Monika Bickert, who is co-responsible for content policy at Facebook, the Taliban will not be allowed in as long as US law prohibits it.
But even if the rules do allow it, Facebook will first have to conduct policy analysis on the group. The first question that needs to be answered is whether the Taliban are violating rules on dangerous organizations.
The US State Department does not label the Afghan Taliban as a foreign terrorist organization like the Pakistani Taliban. But Washington sanctions the group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
For that reason, the US assets of those on the blacklist are frozen. Also, Americans are not allowed to work with them.
