Extreme Flooding in Australia from Rain has Already Killed 13, Neighbourhoods in Sydney Evacuated

In Sydney, residents of several neighbourhoods are being evacuated due to the severe flooding that is currently ravaging Australian coastal towns in the states of New South Wales and Queensland.

With the discovery of four more bodies on Wednesday in the flooded city of Lismore, the storm in Australia has already claimed the lives of at least 13 people. In addition, thousands of people are still missing.

The “rain bomb” in eastern Australia has caused record flooding in recent days, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes. Australian media show images of the water reaching roofs of houses. Meanwhile, the rain front is moving further south from the hard-hit Queensland capital of Brisbane, where clean-up operations have begun, to the suburbs of Sydney.

Authorities warned residents of dangerous weather conditions, including heavy rain, high winds and flash flooding, and urged everyone to stay indoors.

Australia is being hit particularly hard by climate change. Many people still suffered from a merciless heatwave in mid-January, with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees. However, the unusually large amounts of precipitation in recent days can be explained by La Nina, a climatic phenomenon that causes lower seawater temperatures in part of the Pacific Ocean.
