EU leaders will hold another video summit on the pandemic on Thursday. A “catch-up session”, according to a senior diplomat: about how the member states can better coordinate corona measures with each other, about the vaccines and to exchange experiences about the second wave.
But in the meantime, the EU has also ended up in a budget crisis, and it is unthinkable that this is not also discussed during the consultations.
The agreement reached on July 27 on the multi-year budget for 2021 to 2027 and an associated recovery fund to absorb the blows of the corona crisis after five exhausting days is in question.
The Hungarians and Poles are blocking the budget now that the European Parliament has stipulated strict conditions between receiving EU subsidies and maintaining the rule of law. The majority of the other member states have given their approval.
The blockade will not be resolved on Thursday, and the atmosphere can be cut. There are calls somehow to set up a recovery fund without the troublemakers. The 25 other leaders would probably like to hear from Prime Ministers Orbán and Morawiecki how they intend to resolve the issue.
