The coronavirus outbreak has now claimed the lives of more than 50,000 people in India. The death toll rose by 941 in the past 24 hours, the health ministry reports.
More than 2.6 million people have been diagnosed with the virus.
The total death toll from the pandemic stands at 50,921 in India, which has 1.3 billion inhabitants.
Only the United States, Brazil, and Mexico have reported more deaths from the virus. The Indian ministry emphasizes that the death rate in India is “one of the lowest in the world”, standing at less than 2 percent.
It took 23 days for 50,000 deaths to be reported in the US, 95 days in Brazil and 141 days in Mexico. It took India 156 days to arrive at this national figure, the department said in a statement.
Experts question the accuracy of the Indian corona figures. The cause of death of patients would not always be correctly recorded.
