The drug Remdesivir may be used in Europe for the treatment of patients with Covid-19.

The European Commission accelerated its approval on Friday after a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

It is the first drug against the disease to be authorized across the EU.

The European Commission is negotiating with the American producer Gilead about sufficient doses of the antiviral for the EU countries.

There are concerns about delivery because the United States would have bought almost all of its factory stock for the next three months.

The European Commission is making every effort to make treatments or vaccines against Covid-19 available, says EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides (Health).

The so-called conditional marketing authorization in Europe means that experts consider the drug to be likely effective, and there are only limited side effects.
