China has charged two Canadians on suspicion of espionage. The prosecutor announced this on Friday.

Diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor are suspected of having passed on Chinese state secrets to Canada.

The pair were arrested in late 2018 after Canada detained Huawei top woman Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver.

Ties between the two countries have deteriorated considerably since Meng’s arrest.

Meng was arrested because she was wanted in the United States. Huawei has been accused by Washington of violating trade sanctions against Iran.
