The United Kingdom is accelerating the procurement of corona vaccines due to discovering the new Omicron variant of the virus.
Health Minister Sajid Javid announced that an additional 114 million doses had been ordered from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech. Those are to be delivered in 2022 and 2023, Sky News reported on Thursday.
“I accelerated this purchase because of the new variant,” Javid told the news channel. “This includes purchasing modified vaccines so that we can have the vaccines we need in the long term.” The minister called vaccination the best line of defence against the virus. “That is also the reason for the enormous expansion of our booster program.”
Dozens of Omicron infections have already been identified in the United Kingdom. The government confirmed earlier this week that the vaccination campaign is being stepped up considerably. All adults should be offered a booster shot before the end of January. The period between the second and third injection can also be shortened from six to three months.
