Police arrested a 28-year-old Syrian in the northern German port of Hamburg on Tuesday on suspicion of planning an Islamist attack. His brother, four years his junior, who lives in Kempten in southern Germany, is said to have helped with the planning.
The Bundeskriminalamt, the Federal Criminal Investigation Service, the Landeskriminalamt and the Hamburg public prosecutor’s office announced this on Tuesday.
The two brothers are suspected of preparing an attack on civilian targets with a self-made bomb belt. The 28-year-old is the prime suspect. He had been buying basic materials for the production of explosives for several weeks via the online platform eBay and other sellers. His brother in Kempten had encouraged him during the planning.
The court in Hamburg had already issued an arrest warrant against the 28-year-old for financing terrorism. Several buildings in Hamburg and Kempten were searched on Tuesday morning. Extensive evidence, including chemicals, was seized. A total of 250 police officers were involved in the operation.
